Cars or trucks?

A boy in Nagpur finishes his ITI. He wants a job in a Tata workshop. He finds two near his house and applies to both.

One repairs trucks. One repairs cars. He does not know that these are now two separate companies.

The truck workshop calls him first. They ask about air brakes and axle loads. He has touched neither, and the interview ends there.

The Board Says Tata. Your Salary Slip Will Not.

Tata does not run its service centres itself. Dealers run them.

The workshop near you is owned by a private dealership company. That company hires you, fixes your salary, and signs your appointment letter.

Tata sets the repair standards, supplies the spare parts, runs the training and audits the work. But your name is on the dealer’s payroll register, not Tata’s.

This is why two Tata workshops in the same district can pay two different salaries for the same work. They are owned by two different businessmen.

It also decides where you go when your PF is missing or your salary is late. The dealer’s office, not any Tata number.

The wait that leads nowhere

Filling the form on the Tata Motors company careers page and then waiting for a workshop call. That page is for plant and office jobs. Workshop hiring never goes through it. People lose four and five months this way.

One Company Became Two, and It Changed Who Employs You

On 1 October 2025 Tata Motors split into two listed companies. This is not a small legal detail. It changes what you should apply for.

The name “Tata Motors Limited” now belongs to the commercial vehicle business — trucks, buses, pickups. The car business became Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, with effect from 13 October 2025.

Two companies, two networks, two sets of dealers, two very different workshop floors.

A car workshop works on Nexon, Punch, Harrier and the EVs. A truck workshop works on Ace, Intra, Signa and buses. Different tools, different training, different customer.

So before you apply anywhere, look at what is parked inside the gate.

CAR WORKSHOP (TMPV)
✓ Nexon, Punch, Harrier, EVs
✓ Clean bays, customer lounge
✓ Free service jobs move fast
✓ EV and electronics work growing
✓ More jobs for service advisors

TRUCK WORKSHOP (TML)
● Ace, Intra, Signa, buses
● Heavier, dirtier, physical work
● Diesel, air brakes, axles
● Fleet customers, night jobs
● Live ads show higher pay

Neither side is better. But pick one and learn it properly. Jumping between trucks and cars leaves you expert in neither, and that is what stops a salary at ₹18,000.

Every Job Inside a Tata Car Workshop

Most people think a workshop only hires mechanics. It hires around eight roles, and three of them never open a bonnet.

JOB WHAT YOU DO YOU NEED
Auto technician Periodic service, repairs, fault finding ITI Motor Mechanic
Auto electrician Wiring, battery, sensors, screens ITI Electrician
EV technician Battery pack, motor, charging faults ITI plus company EV training
Service advisor Meet the customer, open the job card, explain the bill 12th or diploma
Denting and painting Accident body repair, paint booth ITI or on-job training
Spare parts staff Issue parts, keep stock, handle warranty returns 12th pass
Washing and cleaning Wash and finish before delivery 10th or none
Service CRM Booking calls, reminders, feedback 12th or graduate
Workshop supervisor Allot work to bays, check quality Promotion only

Washing is the door most people ignore. It needs nothing on paper, and a boy who washes well and watches the bays for a year often gets moved inside as a helper.

Salary: the Real Ads, and Where the Averages Fall Apart

We will be blunt about the numbers, because most pages on this topic are not.

Indeed’s page for Tata Motors Technician shows an average of ₹15,974 a month. Read the small print. That average comes from 2 salaries. Two. The employee reviews on the same page run from December 2019 to June 2022.

The Electrician figure on the same page rests on 3 salaries. These are not salary surveys. They are two or three people who typed a number into a website years ago.

So we went to live job ads instead, and we are telling you how confident we are about each line.

Monthly pay in a car workshop

From job ads live in July 2026, not salary estimate sites

Washing and cleaning₹8,000–15,000
Reliable — 17 live ads in Pune alone on one day

Technician, 1–3 years₹15,000–27,000
Fairly reliable — the band repeats across Surat, Pune, Madurai, Coimbatore

Service advisor₹12,000–26,000
Fairly reliable — but the top of that range is incentive, not fixed pay

Auto electrician₹10,000–25,000
Fairly reliable — wide spread across Delhi ads; EV-specific pay is not published anywhere

Truck workshop mechanic₹25,000–40,000
Fairly reliable — live Mumbai region ads, but the work is far heavier

Denting, painting, spare parts, supervisorNot known
Not verified — rarely advertised with a figure, mostly filled by referral or promotion

Watch the “generally” line on job sites. Jobhai’s own summary says car washer pay in Pune “generally ranges from ₹13,393 to ₹29,000”. The cheapest real ad on that same page is ₹7,000–8,000, and several sit at ₹9,000–12,000. Trust the ads, not the summary above them.

Factory Work Runs on a Different Pay Scale

A workshop job and a plant job are two separate careers. Our company guides cover the plant side, including Tata’s own factories.

The Two-Wheeler Question Nobody Warns You About

Two-wheeler and finance

Workshops sit on ring roads and highway edges, where land is cheap. Buses to those spots are thin at 8 in the morning and worse at 8 at night.

That is why so many workshop ads quietly ask for your own bike. If you do not have one, a two-wheeler loan is the normal route, and it gets easier once you have three months of salary slips.

Keep the EMI small. On a first salary of ₹15,000, anything above ₹2,500 hurts every month. Add up the down payment, the EMI, the yearly insurance and the petrol before you sign.

ITEM WHAT TO EXPECT
Down payment The real hurdle — save for it first
Salary slips Most lenders want three months
Two-wheeler insurance Compulsory by law, renew yearly
Petrol to work Budget it — almost never reimbursed

What a Workshop Checks Before It Calls You Back

ITI certificate, or willingness to start as a helper

No ITI is not a full stop at the entry level

Aadhaar, PAN and a bank account

Asked for in the first week — ads say so openly

A licence, and usually your own two-wheeler

Also needed if you ever do a test drive after repair

An engineering degree

Not needed, and it will not raise a technician’s starting pay

1,211 Today, 3,000 by 2031 — Where the Hiring Will Land

Here is the figure that matters most to a job seeker, and hardly anyone quotes it.

In June 2026 the passenger vehicle company laid out its plan to FY2030-31. It has 1,211 service outlets today. It wants more than 3,000.

Sales outlets go from 1,669 to 3,200 over the same period. Market share target: 20 per cent, up from 13.02 per cent in FY2026.

Read that as a hiring plan, because that is what it is. Roughly 1,800 new workshops in five years. Every one of them needs technicians, an advisor, a parts man and a washer on day one.

They will not all open in Mumbai either. A network this size has to spread into district towns, because the metros are already covered.

The truck side is a smaller network built around fleet operators and highway routes. Its FY2026 annual report lists dealer touchpoints as 104 north, 80 west, 72 east and 58 south.

Fewer places, but steadier work. A truck earns money for its owner, so it gets repaired the same day.

Why the EV Bay Has Empty Chairs

Tata sells more electric cars than anyone else in India. In the April–June 2026 quarter it sold 34,467 EVs, more than double the 16,231 of a year earlier. June 2026 alone was 14,800 units, its best month ever.

Every one of those cars comes back for service. And an EV is not a petrol car with a battery in it.

There is no engine oil, no clutch, no timing belt, no silencer. Instead there is a high-voltage battery pack, a motor, a controller and charging electronics.

High-voltage work needs training and insulated tools. An untrained technician should not open that pack, and a good workshop will not let him. That gap is the opportunity — the cars are arriving faster than the trained hands.

Now the honest part. We could not find any published Tata-specific pay figure for an EV technician in India. Anyone quoting you an exact EV premium is guessing.

What we can see in live ads is that the better-paid auto electrician posts in Delhi sit at ₹20,000–25,000 while the weakest sit at ₹8,000–18,000. Electrical skill is what separates them. Treat EV training as the thing that puts you at the top of that band, not as a guaranteed jump.

If you are choosing an ITI trade this year, Electrician has the longer runway than Motor Mechanic. That much is clear from the direction of the sales figures.

The First Salary That Arrives Late, and Why

Banking and salary papers

Dealers pay by bank transfer. They will ask for your account number in week one. Open a zero balance salary account before you join — a missing account is the single most common reason a first salary is delayed.

Then collect the paperwork. PF is not a favour, it is your money, and the UAN carries it to your next job.

ASK FOR WHY IT MATTERS
Zero balance salary account No minimum balance penalty on a small salary
Written appointment letter Names your real employer — the dealer company
EPF and UAN number Your PF follows you when you change workshops
ESIC card, if given Medical cover for you and your family

How People Actually Walk Into These Jobs

1
Decide cars or trucks, then stop mixing them

Different companies now. Applying to both makes you look unsure in the interview.
2
Find the dealer’s company name

It is written on the board and on the bill. That is who you are applying to.
3
Walk in on a weekday morning

Ask for the service manager. Carry two photocopies of your ITI certificate and Aadhaar.
4
Follow the new workshops

With 1,800 more planned, a brand new centre hires a full team at once. Easiest door in.

What the Working Day Really Feels Like

Workshops open early. Customers drop cars on the way to office, so the gate is busiest between 9 and 11 in the morning.

Work comes to you on a job card. The supervisor decides which bay gets what. Free service jobs are quick and pay the workshop least. Paid repairs and body work take longer and earn more.

The afternoon is the quiet, productive stretch. The evening gets loud again as people come to collect and argue about the bill.

Saturday is the heaviest day. Sunday is usually off. Festival weeks and the monsoon are the busiest stretches, because wet roads mean more accidents.

One thing to ask before you join: how the incentive is calculated. In many workshops it depends on the whole branch’s output, not yours. A slow month for the branch becomes a slow month for your pay.

Half a Workshop’s Money Comes From Crashes

Car insurance and accident repair

A big share of a workshop’s income is accident repair, and a car insurance company pays most of that bill, not the customer. So insurance paperwork is part of the daily job, not a side task.

Service advisors handle the cashless claim file, meet the surveyor who inspects the damage, and explain to an angry customer why the bumper is covered but the worn-out part is not.

Learn these four words properly and you are useful in the body shop within months. Most people never bother, which is why it pays to.

TERM WHAT IT MEANS ON THE FLOOR
Cashless claim The insurer pays the workshop directly
Surveyor Inspects the damage before repair is approved
Own damage cover Pays to repair the customer’s own car
Third party only Customer pays the whole repair bill himself

Mistakes That Quietly Cost People This Job

Paying for a joining letter

No authorised workshop charges you to hire you. Anyone selling a “Tata Motors service centre joining letter” for money is running a fraud. Real dealers interview you, and the letter is free.

Working on a verbal promise

Starting without an appointment letter leaves you with no proof of employment and no PF record. Two years later you cannot show a single day of experience. Ask for it in writing in week one, every time.

Eight Questions People Keep Asking

Does Tata Motors directly hire service centre staff?
No. Service centres are run by private dealer companies. The dealer hires you, pays you and gives your appointment letter. Tata supplies the standards, parts and training.

What changed after the demerger?
From 1 October 2025 there are two companies. Tata Motors Limited is the commercial vehicle business. Cars come under Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, renamed on 13 October 2025. Their dealer networks are separate.

Should I apply to a car workshop or a truck workshop?
Pick the one you want to build a career in. Truck workshop ads show higher pay, around ₹25,000 to ₹40,000, but the work is heavier and the skills are diesel, air brakes and axles.

What is the salary of a car workshop technician?
Live job ads in July 2026 show roughly ₹15,000 to ₹27,000 a month depending on the city and experience. Do not trust site averages here, some are built on two or three entries.

What qualification do I need?
ITI in Motor Mechanic Vehicle or Electrician is the normal entry. Washing and helper roles take 10th pass candidates.

Is EV work worth learning?
Yes. Tata sold 34,467 EVs in the April to June 2026 quarter and those cars need trained hands. But no EV technician pay figure has been published, so treat any exact premium you are quoted as unverified.

Are these jobs only in big cities?
No. The car business plans to grow from 1,211 service outlets to over 3,000 by FY2030-31, and that growth has to reach district towns.

Is there any joining fee?
No. Any demand for money is fraud.
