A young man in Kozhikode walks into the new workshop on Koya Road. He shows his ITI certificate. He gets the job.
The board outside says Maruti Suzuki. The name on his salary slip does not.
Most people applying for these jobs do not know this. And it decides your pay, your PF, your leave, and who you talk to when something goes wrong.
Maruti Does Not Hire You — the Dealer Does
Maruti Suzuki does not run its service centres. Dealers run them.
A workshop with an Arena or NEXA board is owned by a private dealership company. That company hires the staff. It decides the salary. It gives the appointment letter.
Maruti sets the rules, sends the spare parts, gives the training, and checks the work. But you are not on Maruti’s payroll.
This is why two workshops in the same city can pay differently for the same work. They are two different companies.
There is one more thing to know. Maruti has two showroom brands — Arena and NEXA — and the service side follows them. NEXA workshops handle the costlier cars and are mostly in bigger cities. Arena workshops handle the regular models and make up most of the network.
For a technician, the work is largely the same. For a service advisor, NEXA expects better customer handling.
Applying on the Maruti Suzuki company careers website for a workshop job. That website is for plant and office jobs. Service centre jobs come from the dealer — on job sites, or by walking in. This is why many people wait months and never get a reply.
Every Job Inside a Service Centre
Most people think a workshop only hires mechanics. It hires about eight different roles. Some never touch a car.
| JOB | WHAT YOU DO | YOU NEED |
|---|---|---|
| Auto technician | Service, repair, fault finding | ITI Motor Mechanic |
| Service advisor | Meet customer, make job card, explain bill | 12th or diploma |
| Auto electrician | Wiring, battery, sensors, EV systems | ITI Electrician |
| Denting and painting | Body repair and paint work | ITI or on-job training |
| Spare parts staff | Store, issue parts, keep stock records | 12th pass |
| Washing and cleaning | Car wash before delivery | 10th or none |
| Service CRM | Booking calls, follow-up, feedback | 12th or graduate |
| Workshop supervisor | Give work to bays, check quality | Promotion only |
Two jobs get ignored by most applicants: service advisor and CRM. Neither needs an ITI. Both deal with customers. Both are closer to incentive money than a technician is.
A workshop is divided by bay. Service bays do the most cars, and new technicians usually start there. Repair bays handle harder faults. Body and paint sits separately with its own team.
Which bay you get on day one matters. Ask about it in the interview.
Salary: the Real Numbers, and Why Other Sites Are Guessing
We have to be honest here in a way most pages are not.
Indeed shows an average of ₹21,681 per month for automotive technician in India, updated 31 January 2026. That number comes from 34 salaries. For the whole country.
Thirty-four. For a network of 6,000 workshops.
The same data shows a senior technician earning ₹20,787 — less than a normal technician. That is not a real salary structure. The sample is simply too small.
So we are giving you the range from actual job listings, and telling you how sure we are about each line.
Factory Jobs Pay Differently — Check Those Too
A workshop job and a factory job are not the same career, and not the same money. Our company guides cover the factory side.
Which Course Actually Raises Your Salary
Maruti Suzuki Training Academy is a registered training provider under the Skill Development Initiative. It trains technicians for dealership work, not only factory work. It also runs a two-year Automotive Repair course approved by the Directorate General of Training.
So the company’s own training route points at the workshop floor. That is the certificate worth getting.
Many technicians also finish a diploma later through distance education or an online automobile course while working. That is the normal way people move from technician to supervisor.
| COURSE | DOES IT HELP? |
|---|---|
| ITI Motor Mechanic (MMV) | Yes — the normal entry ticket |
| ITI Electrician | Yes — and EV work is growing fast |
| Diploma in Automobile Engineering | Yes — supervisor track |
| Private “automobile course” certificate | Often not — check DGT or NCVT approval first |
What the Workshop Checks Before Calling You Back
Getting to Work: the Bike Most Workshops Expect
Workshops open early, and most are on the outskirts of town where public transport is poor. This is why so many listings ask for your own two-wheeler.
If you do not have one, a two-wheeler loan is the usual route. Banks and NBFCs lend against a salary slip, so it becomes easier once you are a few months into the job. Keep the EMI small — a technician’s early salary does not leave much room.
| ITEM | WHAT TO EXPECT |
|---|---|
| Down payment | Usually the biggest hurdle |
| Salary slip | Most lenders ask for three months |
| Two-wheeler insurance | Compulsory, renew every year |
| Fuel to work | Budget it — rarely reimbursed |
Where These Jobs Are — 3,000 Towns, Not Four Metros
This is what makes workshop jobs different from almost every other automobile job in India.
Maruti Suzuki crossed 6,000 service touchpoints in more than 3,000 cities and towns on 10 July 2026. It added the last thousand in about two years. In FY2025-26 alone it opened a record 502 new ones.
Factories are in a few districts. Workshops are in your district.
In FY2025-26 the network serviced more than 2.84 crore vehicles — the highest in company history. Those cars were not driven to Gurugram. Local staff handled every one of them.
The company plans about 500 more service centres in FY2026-27. Every new workshop hires a full team at once, often in a town that had none before.
The 6,000th one tells you where things are heading. It opened in Kozhikode, Kerala, covers 1,820 square metres, and was built with EV servicing and charging from day one.
Petrol work is not going anywhere — those 2.84 crore vehicles were mostly normal cars. But technicians who understand EV systems are still few. If you are picking an ITI trade today, Electrician has the longer future.
Your First Salary Account and the Papers to Ask For
Most dealers pay by bank transfer and will ask for your account details in the first week. Open a zero balance salary account before joining. A missing account is the most common reason a first salary comes late.
| ASK FOR | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|
| Written appointment letter | Shows your real employer — the dealer company |
| Monthly salary slip | Separates basic pay from incentive |
| EPF and UAN number | Your PF follows you to the next job |
| ESIC card, if given | Medical cover for you and family |
How People Actually Get Hired
What a Normal Day Looks Like
Workshops open early and close late. Saturday is the busiest day, because that is when customers are free.
A technician works at a bay, not a desk. Jobs come on a card. The supervisor gives out the work. Free service jobs move fast. Paid repairs and body work take longer and earn the workshop more.
Service advisors have the harder half of the day. They meet the customer, write down the problem, give an estimate, and then explain the final bill when it comes out higher.
Mornings are the most crowded, because people drop their car on the way to office. Afternoons are the productive part. Evenings get busy again as people come to collect.
Sunday is usually off. Festival weeks and new model launches are the busiest times of the year.
The monsoon is another heavy stretch. More accidents means more body and paint work, and that is the most profitable work a workshop does. If you are in denting and painting, expect long days from June to September.
One thing to check before joining: incentives are often based on the whole workshop’s output, not only yours. So a slow month for the branch means a slow month for your pay. Ask whether the incentive is individual, bay-wise or branch-wise.
The Insurance Side of the Job Nobody Explains
A large part of a workshop’s income is accident repair, and almost all of it is paid by a car insurance company, not the customer. So insurance work is part of the daily job.
Service advisors handle cashless claim paperwork, deal with the surveyor who inspects the damage, and explain to the customer why some items are covered and some are not. Learning this well is one of the fastest ways to become useful in the role.
| TERM | WHAT IT MEANS ON THE FLOOR |
|---|---|
| Cashless claim | Insurer pays the workshop directly |
| Surveyor | Inspects damage before repair is approved |
| Own damage cover | Pays for the customer’s own car repair |
| Third party only | Customer pays the full repair bill himself |
Authorised Workshop or Local Garage?
A garage may pay more in hand on day one. An authorised workshop pays more over five years, and gives you something you can take to the next employer. If you are under 25, the workshop is usually the better choice.
There is a third option people forget. Many technicians work four or five years in an authorised workshop, learn the diagnostic machines, build their own customer list, and then open their own garage. The training and the reputation make that possible. A roadside shop gives you neither.
It also helps to know how growth normally happens here. Nobody jumps from technician to manager. The usual path is apprentice, then technician, then senior technician, then bay in-charge, then supervisor. Each step takes roughly two to three years.
Two things move you faster. One is picking up diagnostic and electrical work, because fewer people can do it. The other is being willing to move to a bigger branch or a bigger city when a post opens. Staying in one small workshop for ten years is the most common reason a technician’s salary stops growing.
Mistakes That Cost People This Job
No authorised workshop takes a fee to hire you. Anyone asking for money for a “Maruti service centre joining letter” is running a fraud. Real dealers interview you and give the letter free.
Starting on a verbal promise with no appointment letter leaves you with no proof of employment and no PF record. Ask for it in writing in the first week, every time.
Eight Questions People Keep Asking
Does Maruti Suzuki directly hire service centre staff?
No. Service centres are run by private dealer companies that hire their own staff. Maruti gives the standards, parts and training.
What qualification do I need for a technician job?
An ITI in Motor Mechanic Vehicle or Electrician is the normal entry. Many workshops take 10th pass candidates as apprentices and train them.
What is the salary of a service centre technician?
Job listings show around ₹12,000 to ₹30,000 a month depending on city and experience. Apprentice stipend starts near ₹12,000. Public salary data for this job is very thin, so do not trust a single average.
Technician or service advisor — which pays more?
Service advisor usually pays more because of incentives, but the base is lower and the target pressure is higher.
Do I need an engineering degree?
Not for a technician job. A diploma in automobile engineering helps if you want to reach supervisor level.
Where are these jobs available?
In more than 3,000 cities and towns. Maruti crossed 6,000 service centres in July 2026 and plans about 500 more in FY2026-27.
Should I apply on the Maruti Suzuki careers website?
That website is for factory and office jobs. For a workshop job, go to the dealer directly or look for that dealer’s listing on job sites.
Is there any joining fee?
No. Any demand for money is fraud.
