A technician of forty has spent twenty years on carburettors, oil changes and clutch plates. He is good at it.
Then a scooter rolls in with none of those parts. That machine is what this guide is about.
The Name on the Board Says TVS. The Company Paying You Does Not.
Start with a confusion this brand causes more than any other. Look at who actually advertises the workshop jobs.
A July 2026 search for TVS service vacancies returned sixteen results. The workshop roles came from firms named TVS-AKB Motors in Calicut, TVS-Kollam in Alappuzha, Bharath TVS Motor in Palladam.
Read those names again. Every one carries TVS. Not one of them is TVS Motor Company.
They are private businesses that bought a dealership and put the brand into their own name. Others did not bother — Ishwar Motors in Pune, G.D. Motors in Howrah, Bh Kamala Motors in Kottayam.
All hire the same way. Your salary, your provident fund and your appointment letter come from that firm, not from the company that built the scooter.
It gets worse. Other companies carry the TVS name and do not make your bike. TVS Training and Services runs skilling centres; TVS Mobility is a retail group selling other manufacturers’ machines.
So read the employer field before you read the salary. It is the most useful minute you will spend.
Third in Petrol Bikes, First in Electric Scooters
Now the numbers, because they explain what follows. In June 2026 India registered 18,28,458 two-wheelers. TVS took 3,59,243, a 19.65% share — third, behind Hero on 25.82% and Honda’s two-wheeler arm on 24.76%.
Third is respectable. It is not the story.
Look at electric scooters. That market sold 1,93,495 units in June 2026, up 75% in a year, and TVS was first with 46,999 — a 24% share, ahead of Bajaj, Ather, Hero and Ola.
TVS crossed 10.04 lakh electric scooters registered by 11 June 2026, six and a half years after the iQube launched in January 2020.
The pace is the part to notice. The most recent lakh took 75 days — roughly thirteen hundred machines a day.
One honest limit. No verified count of TVS outlets, EV-capable workshops or trained electric technicians could be found, and the company’s own websites would not open. So no such total is printed here.
The sales figures above are dated and checkable, and they are enough. A million machines have to be serviced somewhere.
An Electric Scooter Has Almost Nothing Left to Service
Here is why that matters to a man holding a spanner. Take everything a petrol bike needs and cross most of it off.
No engine oil. No oil filter. No spark plug. No carburettor or injector. No clutch, no gearbox, no exhaust. On many electric scooters the motor sits in the wheel hub, so there is no chain either.
That is the bulk of a bike mechanic’s twenty years, deleted.
In its place: a battery pack, a controller, a motor and the software running all three. Diagnosis moves from your ear to a fault code.
Read that as a threat if you like. It is the opposite. Every workshop needs men who can do the new work, and hardly anybody has.
| SERVICE ITEM | PETROL BIKE | ELECTRIC SCOOTER |
|---|---|---|
| Oil and filter | Every service, your bread and butter | Does not exist |
| Clutch and gearbox | Plates, cable, adjustment | Does not exist |
| Fuel system | Carburettor or injector, tank, lines | Does not exist |
| Brakes, tyres, suspension | Routine work | Routine work, unchanged |
| Battery | Small 12-volt, cheap to swap | High-voltage pack, the costliest part |
| Fault finding | Sound, feel, experience | Scan tool, codes, software update |
Notice the fourth row. Brakes, tyres and suspension do not change, so a workshop still needs ordinary hands as well as trained ones.
Eight Jobs Behind a Two-Wheeler Workshop Gate
Most TVS outlets sell and service under one roof, so the staff list is shorter than a car dealership’s and the jobs blur.
| JOB | WHAT YOU DO ALL DAY | YOU NEED |
|---|---|---|
| Two-wheeler technician | Service, brakes, chain, fuel system, road test | 10th, or trained on the bay |
| Helper on the ramp | Fetch parts, hold tools, watch and learn | Nothing on paper |
| EV technician | Battery, controller, motor, charging faults | Electrical trade plus EV training |
| Electrical and diagnostics man | Wiring, starter, sensors, scan tool | ITI Electrician helps a lot |
| Service advisor | Job card, estimate, the customer call, the bill | 12th pass, decent talking |
| Washing and polishing | Wash, dry and finish before delivery | Nothing on paper |
| Spare parts counter | Stock, issue, indent, warranty claims | 10th or 12th pass |
| Works manager | Bay allotment, targets, complaints, the floor | Usually promoted from inside |
Only the third row is new, and it is the one nobody can fill. The rest has existed in bike workshops for fifty years.
The Search That Prices a Bike Mechanic Like a Solar Technician
Try looking up what this work pays. An all-India search for two wheeler technician in July 2026 returned sixteen listings.
Among them: a solar technician in Bhubaneswar, a telecom man in Dhanbad, a CCTV technician in Indore, two carpenters and an air-conditioning fitter.
Search ev technician instead and it fails differently. Fifteen listings, one salary: ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 a month in Hyderabad, at a vehicle rental firm rather than a workshop.
A range that wide tells you nothing. It is a placeholder, not an offer.
Watch the units too. On the same page a Chennai inspection job was advertised at ₹3,00,000 to ₹4,00,000 per year, beside monthly figures, with nothing marking the difference.
So the table below uses only ads naming a real figure for a real two-wheeler job, with the confidence on every line.
The honest headline: bike work pays less than car work for the same years. Smaller machine, smaller bill, smaller salary.
A Plant Job at Hosur Is Not a Workshop Job in Your Town
TVS builds its machines in its own factories, the largest at Hosur in Tamil Nadu. Those are manufacturing jobs.
Different application route, different pay structure, different interview. A workshop application never reaches them, and a factory application never reaches a workshop.
Decide which you want first. Doing one and hoping for the other wastes months.
How a Man With No Degree Gets Trained on High Voltage
The practical part, without decoration. A national body exists for this exact trade.
The Automotive Skills Development Council, set up in 2011 by the vehicle industry, runs two job roles that matter to you: Electric Vehicle Service Technician and Electric Vehicle Service Assistant, Two-Wheeler.
Partner centres deliver them across eight states. Length and fees are not published centrally, so ask the centre nearest you.
| ROUTE | WHAT IT IS WORTH |
|---|---|
| ASDC EV service technician course | The industry’s own certificate for this job |
| ITI Electrician | The best base an EV bay can ask |
| ITI Mechanic Two and Three Wheeler | The matching trade, offered by few |
| Dealer training after joining | Free, and how most men certify |
Take the electrical route. On an electric machine, the wiring man is the mechanic.
What a Works Manager Looks At Before He Says Yes
Petrol Still Pays the Bills, and You Will Service That Too
Do not read the last few sections and imagine an all-electric workshop. That is not what you walk into in 2026.
Even at TVS, electric is a growing minority: about 47,000 scooters in June against roughly 3.59 lakh two-wheelers registered that month.
So most of your day is still oil, brakes and chains, and the electric machines arrive in ones and twos.
Sales of them are heaviest in cities and large towns, where the charging and the buying power are. In a tehsil town, petrol work will carry you a while yet.
Learn the new trade anyway — before the machines arrive, not after.
The Number That Follows You From Job to Job
For many men on a bike ramp, a dealership is the first job paying into a bank rather than a hand.
Ask for a zero balance salary account, opened by the employer, so no minimum balance penalty eats it.
Then ask for your UAN — one number for your whole working life, and the thing that proves you were employed.
That matters in a trade you plan to leave upward: a man moving to car work is judged on his record.
| TERM | WHY YOU CARE |
|---|---|
| Salary account | Zero balance, opened by the firm |
| EPF | Your savings, plus the employer’s |
| UAN | One number across every job you hold |
| ESIC | Medical cover for you and family |
Check the deposits yourself every few months. Small firms miss them.
How People Actually Get Taken On at a Bike Workshop
The Petrol Bay or the Electric Bay
Inside the same workshop there are now two kinds of job, and in a few years they will pay differently.
For most readers the answer is both. Take the petrol job now, because it exists, and put your hand up for every electric machine that comes in.
Scarcity is the only thing that raises a technician’s pay, and here you can see where the next shortage is.
The Battery Pack Costs More Than the Rest of the Scooter
On petrol bikes, body work is a cash job. The owner skips own damage cover, pays from his pocket and haggles over each panel.
Electric inverts that, because one part is worth more than everything around it. Nobody pays for a battery pack out of a wallet.
So here the insurance conversation is real, and the man who understands it is useful at the desk as well as the ramp.
| TERM | WHAT IT MEANS |
|---|---|
| Third party cover | Compulsory. Pays for damage to others, not his |
| Own damage cover | Optional. The one that pays for his own repair |
| Cashless claim | Insurer settles with the workshop direct |
| Surveyor | Inspects damage, approves the estimate |
Warranty is not insurance, and customers mix them up daily. Read the booklet once.
Mistakes That Cost People This Job
TVS Training and Services, one of the companies carrying this name, publishes an alert stating that it never charges a fee for applications, offers or interviews, and that any demand for money is a scam. The same rule holds at every workshop gate.
Private institutes sell costly electric vehicle courses on the promise of a premium nobody has published. Get hired first, take the free dealer training, add a recognised certificate after. Do not fund a guess.
Eight Questions Two-Wheeler Technicians Keep Asking
Does TVS Motor Company directly hire workshop staff?
No. Workshops are run by private dealer firms, and many put TVS into their own trading name. That is why the confusion is so common here.
Do I need an ITI to work on a two-wheeler bay?
No. Most technicians start as helpers and learn on the ramp. For the electric side, ITI Electrician is the most useful thing to bring.
Is servicing an electric scooter really that different?
Yes. No engine oil, no clutch, no fuel system. The work becomes battery, controller, motor and diagnostics, plus the usual brakes and tyres.
Does an EV technician earn more?
Nobody publishes a figure, and no July 2026 ad offered a premium. The case is scarcity over the next few years, not extra money this month.
What does a two-wheeler technician earn?
Few ads print anything. One July 2026 listing offered ₹15,000 to ₹36,360 a month through a manpower agency. One ad is one ad.
Does bike work pay less than car work?
Yes, for the same years. Smaller machine, smaller bill, smaller salary. Car technicians with three years were advertised at ₹22,000 to ₹35,000.
Where do I get proper EV training?
The Automotive Skills Development Council runs electric vehicle service technician courses through partner centres in several states. Ask your nearest centre for duration and fee.
Is there any joining fee?
No. A genuine workshop never charges you to hire you. Any demand for a deposit, uniform charge or training fee is a fraud.
